Living Offline

Sometimes I get tired of social media.

Really tired.

On any given day my eyes and ears are assaulted by a Petri dish of inappropriate status updates, pictures and an ample serving of bad news I didn't ask for. I get tired of superfluous status updates and interactions with the depth of a Koi Pond. I'm tired of too much information and status updates that belong in a diary, or those talking about their haters (they aint got none). Stories that are dark, dismal and dank when I prefer my life in the sunshine.

It leaves me wanting...
some substance and depth
finding it is daunting.

Social media overload has me and it probably has you too.

Make it stop.

I know I am not the only one who is tired, but social media moves with a quickness. It grows on us swift and sneaky like an e-coli colony on a piece of lukewarm steak. This epidemic of social media oversharing is the equivalent of kindergarten show and tell on steroids. Our society has become addicted to social media.

Can we call an addiction an addiction?

There are those who despite their best efforts find themselves attached to their cellphone like a high grade Neodymium magnet and can't get through breakfast, lunch or dinner without looking at their phone or jumping at every "ding" their phone makes with random status updates. Giving those in their presence the level of attention an unfaithful lover gives his side piece.

Part time and half assed.

Make it stop.

Real authentic connections cannot take place when people are so overzealous about social media that they cannot embrace the real and present moment. That warm human touch you can't get from a computer screen is fading faster than a pair of distressed jeans sitting in a bucket of bleach. The irony of social media is that it has made many of us less social.

Can we get back to real living and real interaction instead of living in a plastic bubble of social media superficiality? We are turning into a society that is letting social media superimpose on a real moment. It only takes a second and "blink" you missed it.

It doesn't look like social media is going anywhere, so we may not be able to make it stop, but we can certainly put things back into their rightful place. And now as I hit the publish button, I am off to have a human moment because I crave that warm fuzzy touch you can't get from a computer screen or cell phone.

  1. Nicely said LV. "An addiction would always be an addiction no matter what the behavior is." I have enjoyed taking time off from my social media platforms to enjoy real life communication with loved ones and it always feels great.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

I am glad you enjoyed my commentary on social media. I have truly enjoyed a nice long break from social media. It has been so refreshing for me that I plan to do it more often.

  3. I know that you've been unplugged from social media all month, so I hope you are really enjoying your digital detox. Yes, social media is definitely addicting and a lot of people abuse it. It's oversharing that really gets to me. There are so many things that the world simply doesn't need to know about people. And yes, we all need to learn to not look at our phones for periods of time without it feeling like the end of the world.

The over sharing is definitely annoying. Yes, I have been loving my digital detox. I am definitely not a person who keeps my phone glued to me and i don't have to look at my phone every few minutes. It seems like a lot of us have forgotten how to enjoy each other's company without looking at our phones.

  5. So agree with your post and Cheryl's comment above, LV. I myself sometimes have to catch myself when I'm on the phone coz it's so easy to get glued to it! The past few weeks, it's only been blogs I've really been visiting. No longer on FB, and not really much on IG anymore. Twitter I use once in awhile coz I do like how short the updates are over there:D

  6. Well written, LV. You're right - it isn't going anywhere. That's where we come in...those of us who crave real connections. We have to make the effort to step away. In the end we always discover we didn't really miss anything, but gained precious, intimate moments to cherish.

  7. What a great relevant post! Social media is out of control in a sense...so much overload and everyone trying to almost one up each other. Or maybe look at it from a different perspective and just people genuinely sharing their joy.I love social media but you do have to take breaks from time to time or you will get stuck in the social media matrix. Its true I know people who can't function without their phone and every ding they have to check their phone...I am guilty sometimes too but i am controlling it better.

  8. @Emmylou,
it can be hard to pull ourselves away, but I refuse to be glued to mine

    @Glenda
I definitely try my best not to be the kind of person who can't stop looking at my phone, especially when in the company of others. It's borderline rude.

    @Kiwi,
I know a couple of people who can't function without their cell phones. Scratching my head and wondering how society got like this. Technology can be a blessing and a curse.

  10. I love my Social Media but having a 'human moment' is definitely something I make sure I do - often. Too much of anything is not a good thing. Great Post!

  11. Yes, it truly is a gift and a curse sometimes. I've been learning to pull away a bit more and focus more on the work.

  12. I really enjoy "offline" relationships more. It's crazy to see how people are "besties" on social media, but don't talk on the phone or catch up. Every once in a while, I have to tune myself out and build relationships outside of social media. They tend to last longer.

  13. This is a great post. I often have to remind myself to put my phone down when I am out and about with my family. I actually appreciate sometimes going to areas where I have no cellphone access because then I am forced to be more present.

  14. Social media has been getting on my entire nerves lately. I'm an empath so I can only take so much before someone else's negativity ruins my mood. And if I'm in a bad mood, someone's highlight reel can ruin it for me too. It's important to take time away. P.S. Sorry I'm late with my comment btw. :-) I do love scrolling Instagram and Pinterest because it gives me inspiration to do more and tackle projects that I've been sitting on.

  15. I don't think I'm addicted to social media. I think that if my sites didn't rely on it I wouldn't use it nearly as much.

  16. Awesome post. Social media is a part of my job but I definitely feel you. Sometimes I just need to unplug and get away from it all.

  17. Oh the balance between building a brand and not letting SM take over you! This is a great post and I do unplug from time to time. Need to do it more....

  18. It's hard when you want to make a cares out of blogging to remember to find the balance in everything. I catch myself STUCK on the phone sometimes and I have to remove myself and remember to live in the moment. Especially because I have such a young son!
